BAY OF BENGAL LITERACY

The Bay of Bengal literacy is an understanding of the Bay of Bengal’s influence on you and your influence on the Bay of Bengal

The Bay of Bengal Literacy encompasses the whole marine, brackish, and freshwater areas of and related to the Bay of Bengal Large Marine Ecosystem (BOBLME), the river systems that drain into the bay, and the basin or catchment areas of those river systems.

A Bay of Bengal-literate person:

  • Understands essential principles and fundamental concepts about the Bay of Bengal’s nature, characteristics, processes, and its value in our life;
  • Capable of communicating with others in a meaningful way about the Bay of Bengal; and
  • Can make informed and responsible decisions regarding the Bay of Bengal

The ‘essential principles and fundamental concepts of the Bay of Bengal literacy’ have been developed by the Bay of Bengal Stewardship locally, and it is based on internationally-recognized principles and concepts of Ocean literacy.

Since different disciplines of science are interrelated to understand the global Ocean, essential principles and fundamental concepts of the Bay of Bengal literacy are not limited to any particular discipline. Therefore, one fundamental concept can be used to explain multiple essential principles. These essential principles and fundamental concepts as mentioned in this guidebook will contribute to bringing coordination, compatibility, and consistency among different disciplines under ocean sciences, education and mass-communications on the Bay of Bengal.

The Bay of Bengal Literacy presents a vision of ocean-literate and Bay of Bengal-literate societies in the littoral countries; Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.
